Output from EU PVGIS 5.2. Self-use range from WattCharger, Aug 2026: without a battery most homes export 30–50% of what they make. Simple payback, before panel wear or price changes. It's an estimate, not a quote.
Batteries
Purevolt says a standard battery adds around €1,300 to €1,400, Selectra puts batteries at €1,700 to €2,400 for 5kWh to 10kWh (Selectra, updated 12 Sep 2026), and the Irish Times says they typically cost more than €4,000 (Irish Times, 25 Sep 2026). SEAI pays a flat €600 towards a battery of 5kWh or more (SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026 (read 3 Nov 2026)). Battery prices and payback in Wexford.
The grant
SEAI pays €700 per kWp for the first 2kWp of panels and €200 for each extra kWp up to 4kWp, so €1,800 at most for the panels. A battery of 5kWh or more adds a flat €600, so the most a home gets is €2,400 (SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026 (read 3 Nov 2026)). How to apply.
VAT and exports
Solar panels supplied and fitted to homes have had 0% VAT since May 2023 (Grant Thornton). A battery fitted with the panels is 0% too; a battery fitted on its own carries 23% VAT (SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026 (read 3 Nov 2026)).
Every supplier has to pay you for power you send to the grid. On standard plans that's 15.89c to 19.5c per kWh (WattCharger, Aug 2026), and up to €400 a year of it is tax-free (Irish Times, 15 Oct 2026).
